Between the Magpie and the Koel is a digital graphic collage combining Sri Lankan artefacts, found imagery, personal jewellery, poetry, and archival family photographs from the 1960s and 70s. Through layered visuals and stream-of-consciousness writing, the work explores memory, displacement, identity, and the gradual erosion of cultural connection over time. Having moved back and forth across multiple countries, cities, and schools throughout most of my childhood, I grew up in a somewhat state of departure. Now living in Australia as part of the Sri Lankan diaspora, I've finally experienced stillness for the first time. This piece exists within that stillness. It is both an attempt to preserve fragments of memory before they disappear, and acknowledge that identity itself is often layered and constantly shifting, made up from the sum of our parts.
